CNN News: Azeem Rips Peter King..

Salam, I had to put this up, I’m actually a day late compared to some of the other blogger’s, yea desi timing but I’m still in California so I haven’t had time to put any posts up, I apologize. When I saw this video I got real hyped and it was definitely worth watching. Inshallah When I get back to Brooklyn I’ll be typing new posts till my fingers swell up. Na chill it’s not that serious.

On the the other hand, shout out to my boy Azeem Khan of Islamic Circle of North America on CNN defending the Subway Project and Clearing up some misconceptions related to it, most importantly the controversy on Imam Siraj Wahhaj.

Let’s keep it real and look at this with an open minded approach, Peter king got aired out. Azeem, I like how you came at him with a Brooklyn hood punchline. It’s real funny seeing people make uneducated comments then feeling weak on National T.V.

I’m happy they gave you the last words on the mike. Thank You CNN for not being like the Sly Fox News.

Alright I’m out…Wasalaam Yo!

You Deserve To Know - The Biggest Dawah Ad Campaign in New York City.

Salam,

All the bloggers reading this, spread the word inshallah asap!

Mashallah this is official, ICNA will be launching ” the subway project”. A unique and appealing dawah ad campaign on the New York City Subways. The concept revolves around “You deserve to know”. So throughout different trains you will see banners, one black asking a question, for example, Hijab?. Then another banner which will be white, right next to it, guiding the interested viewer to the website and information about Islam which will be www.whyislam.org. This project will be launched in Ramadan inshallah.

The best part about it is that this is marketing at its best to promote the universality of Islam.

Below is information from the official Youdeservetoknow.org website, check it out.

On any given average weekday in New York City, approximately 4.9 million people ride the subway system. That’s over 140 million people per month.

These people come from all walks of life, almost every country in the world is represented in the subway through its passengers at any given time of the day. Rich and poor, artists and scientists, students and teachers all make use of the New York City subway system. It is the common denominator (the melting pot) for New York City. Many global and large companies take advantage of this fact and sometimes buy out every ad on a subway car. The effectiveness of ad placement in the New York City subway system is unquestionable.

Instead of asking ‘Why Not?’ We should ask ‘Why did we not think of this before?’

Think: $2.1 million is spent on a 30 second advertising spot during the Super Bowl. Now that is the power of media.

Similarly, The Subway Project has been designed strategically to promote Islam in the NYC Subway system via advertisements in subway cars. We aim to have advertisements run for an four weeks, set for this Ramadan, September 2008. Insha Allah.

We ask you to participate by signing up.

ICNA Convention Recap..

Alhumduillah I was able to attend the ICNA Convention (aka the low fitnah convention) as I do every year, I have been going since I’ve been born. Can’t break the codes. Anyhows it was real fun as it usually is, Mashallah the speeches were amazing. The bazaar was hot, I bought one book on the scientific miracles of the Quran, a Palestinian kuffiyah which says ” We will return”, and guess what they didn’t have halal marshmallows. I think next year I’ll just open a booth selling them, since no one else isn’t.Oh Yea! Guess what else I bought, a t shirt from my friends over at phatwa factory who had a booth.

I bought it for my nephew Musa, he’s 18 months, its a baby blue t shirt which say ” change me, i just broke my wudu”. haha,Cute isn’t it. Everyone like that one in particular. Phatwa factory was also selling another one for baby’s which said ” Error, not available for marriage, please try again later”. Haha, I bought the other one though because it wasn’t buy one get one free.

Umm…I was able to meet alot of people. That’s one thing about ICNA convention, its like facebook in reality. You meet so many people you  haven’t seen in so long and you can catch up on life including alot of people which loved my blog that I met for the first time. That was pretty motivating. The accommodation in the hotels were nice, I was able to stay in a suite with like 15 friends. Haha, you know how we do. Brotherhood all day. It was real comfortable, I like sleeping on the floor, I get better sleep. Though I hardly get sleep at convention anyways because of random plans, a little rest is enough. I came friday morning at like 3 : 30 a.m. and left around 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Man time flys at convention, I hope it gets longer in the future. Oh yea! the fireworks were pretty impressive, it was July 4th weekend, so the city of Connecticut had a little show right outside the convention center. That attracted a huge crowd. The Friday prayer was real soothing for the soul, the recitation was breathtaking, Shaykh Ramadan from MAS Youth center in Brooklyn led it. If you haven’t heard his recitation, then you have no idea what your missing. Get on it quick.

The workshops were cool, one of them which was called  ” Drug culture, looking for the quick fix”. I enjoyed that, Brother Arif husain ripped it as usual, he bought out all the skeletons and hit important points to help those surrendering to their lower desires. Guidelines for potheads and basically those being driven by their animalistic desires.

Shakyh Yasir Qadhi is the man, he reminds me of desi Shaykh Hamza Yusuf ( May Allah swt preserve them all) His ability to discuss issues at a high level and keep the crowds attention is quite impressive. His Intellectual delivery goes straight to the heart. Before he started each speech, he would have the crowd get up and stretch. As you extend your hands to the right and left you massage the persons shoulder who’s next to you. That sort of got the blood flowing as he says, so that people aren’t brain dead and don’t go to sleep. He sure knows how to wake the audience up and keep them awake.

Monkey in the Middle..

Salam,

Lights, Camera, Action. What kind of dawah methodology are you packin?  Think again. We know Islam is a religion of moderation, unfortunately some people try to make it hard like constipation. It seems like staying middle on the straight path is getting more difficult with a bunch of loose Muslims.

Let’s look at the definition of methodology and dawah.

meth·od·ol·o·gy

1.a set or system of methods, principles, and rules for regulating a given discipline, as in the arts or sciences.

da·wah

2. to invite.

Not to scare away.

One time I went to a masjid in Brooklyn and I came across a brother who ran the masjid and immediately he spotted my friend with a nike golf cap and told him to take it off. When we asked him why, he said because shatan sits on the rim of the cap (haha). Then he went and got us some free kufi’s to put on our head. Come on, are you serious? well he was, but I was stunned. Well I haven’t gone back since.

Talk about being strict to the next level. Forget that, it was the most uneducated thing I ever heard. Wearing kufi’s is no doubt better, but how you going to tell someone shatan is sitting on their hat. How did he see shatan sitting? I didn’t see him. (joke)

This is a perfect example of Muslims Drowning in minor details…..Sometimes we get this approach from people about Islam that it chases us away from it. We all know Islam teaches us to man up, be intelligent and recognize the bigger problems and then rectify them. We got to look at the big picture, people got their approach out of order like a Picasso painting. We have to question how to present Islam to the Non Muslims on a collective and individual level.

We can talk about a whole bunch of issues, some of them in our own homes, others in the masjid and within our inner circle of peers A.K.A our brothers and sisters.

At the end of the day, you gotta be strict and gentle when the situations requires you to do so.

Let’s keep it real, all those differences have to be put aside, we got much more that binds us than that which splits us apart. Like a rapper once said in the Nike commercial say ” A family that prays together stays together and one that walks apart just falls apart”.

Last week I was able to talk to a customer who came to my store. He was wearing a fitted, akademiks apparel, white nike uptowns, had some tattoos and was wearing jewelry. At first I was just helping him, then he asked me to tell him about all the hottest gear that’s out. So I started naming some brands and he was completely lost. He said he’s fresh out out of jail so he hasn’t been updated on all the newest fashion.

Jail? The first thing that came to my mind was what did he do that got him there. So I asked him and he said ” I did 4 and a half years, and just came out two weeks ago. He got caught with two guns on his waist. To be specific it was two rugers. He was a drug dealer and someone basically snitched on him.

Anyways we started talking about life and how prison transforms people. I told him it’s a blessing for you to be out, it could have always been worse and you should thank god for giving you another chance. He kept it real and followed me through the conversation. When I told him, look at it as a test, he agreed with me 100 percent. I told him a lot of people who go to jail, they are actually happy they got imprisoned. The reason for that is its sort of like discipline, because they are punished they in return learn their lesson. Then I asked him about jail, the environment in particular.

He got into a couple of fights, he said its real tough. Sort of like the concrete jungle. Then I asked him if he had seen any Muslims in jail, he said of course. I asked him how was their character and he responded ” they were always the first to get food, they always stuck together and most importantly often read their Holy Qurans to keep themselves rest assured”. He said they didn’t get into fights and kept calm and didn’t bother anyone.

Now let’s zoom out of this real quick, in a prison, your mental and physical state can react often in the worst ways because of the psychological stress. Now here we have this non muslim former prisoner who was impressed by the presentation of Muslims.

All they did was keep to their principles, and they were able to leave him with a positive mark. In the toughest of environments, controlling your desires and restraining from anger is a huge test. Mashallah these muslims did that, as a result this guy was able to see Islam as it is. They didn’t talk to him, nor did they start beef with him. It was all about ethics, morals and manners. Nowadays, we have people who don’t smile, they grill you mad hard. So when we were finishing our conversation, he said he would read about Islam and he appreciates life much more now.

Don’t make Islam hard, just think of yourself as a mirror to Islam, the better you present yourself the clearer the window be Inshallah. In this society, grounding yourself as a Muslim  with solid principles as well as advancing in whatever professionalism you wish to achieve can be challenging. Just drill it into your hearts that Islam is applicable to all times and all environments from jail to the work place, the better you embody it, the better the perception of those who see it.

So you got the message? DON’T BE A MONKEY IN THE MIDDLE. Calm down, don’t get ahead of yourself. Like Shaykh Hamza Yusuf said ” Islam is not right, nor is it left, it is straight as an arrow”.

So that’s what I wanted to discuss, I will talk about the ICNA convention recap soon inshallah. Just came back today, I apologize for everyone who’s waiting for my article. I’m moving slow like a turtle, but you know what they say “Progress is a slow process”. So stay tooned folks…waslaaam.
