Islam in the NYPD With Imam Khalid Latif

New York City Police Department

Salam,

Mashallah! May Allah swt reward Imam Khalid Khatif and all the Muslim officers, Ameen.

I like when the NYPD official said in the video how when you need a cop to help you, you don’t ask him what religion he is. It all comes down to serving your country and being a productive member of society. Imam Khalid Latif is an Imam (Muslim leader) for the NYPD. He is the youngest police chaplain in the history of the NYPD, and the only Muslim leader on the entire state force.

So everyone who has built a hate for Muslims and Islam in their heart, now you should take it easy because the next time you need help, it may be Imam Khalid Latif or another Muslim officer. This of course applies to Muslims who call non Muslim cops for help also.

Introducing Cordoba Gold: The Sharia compliant MasterCard

Salam,

All of you brothers and sisters from the UK that spend wisely and don’t live beyond your financial means, you now can get a credit card that’s shariah complaint.

Mashallah, I’ve been waiting for something like this, too bad it’s not available in the U.S. yet. I currently have a chase debit card, used to be Washington Mutual but they went bankrupt. Anyway my debit card can be used as a MasterCard, but it doesn’t effect my credit. With this shariah compliant credit card, you swipe only when you put money on the card and it counts towards your credit score.

So how exactly does the Cordoba Gold Shariah compliant Mastercard work? Read below.

From cordobagold.com

The new Cordoba Gold works like a pay-as-you-go mobile phone - you can only ever spend what you have topped up onto your card, so there is no risk of overspending or getting yourself into debt, and you don’t get monthly bills.

There is no credit with Cordoba Gold , so there is no credit check!

As long as you are a UK resident and you are aged 18 years or over, you will be accepted for a Cordoba Gold personalized Cordoba Gold card. So even if you have never used a credit card or you don’t have a bank account, you can have your own.

I thought another condition for having the card was yoou have to be Muslim to get it? Joke. Anyways, we all know how credit cards come at you like shatan when your a fresh college student.

Well if your getting tempted to get a credit card, all I have to say it don’t get caught up with the nufsi nufsi impulse buying mentality, only buy something if you can afford it right there and then. It’s all about keeping it real with yourself, don’t try to act like your living a baller lifestyle if you don’t have the halal guap. Oh, guap means money in Brooklyn.

Enough slang, have a nice day and go give your zakat. Being cheap is haram =)

Salam,

While everyone is waiting for Baba Ali to launch halfourdeen.com, seems like baitulnikah.com already got the head start for the first halal Muslim marriage website.

I really like the flash on the site along with the unique look, talk about setting standards for Islamic sites.

So who started baitulnikah.com and why?

It’s actually a brother named - Kassim Muhammad, Sr. (Founder & CEO)

Here is a message from the founder taken from the official site, also see the about the website below.

As-Salaamu-Alaikum! I’ve been married since I was 18 years old. My first marriage didn’t work out. She was a new Shahada, her parents were non-Muslim and they made it extremely difficult for her to practice Islam. Because of that, our marriage suffered. I re-married again at age 20 and I’ve been married to the same woman for the last 13-years and Alhamdulilah we have 7 children. 4 boys and 1 girl who are here now and then two more on the way insha-Allah (twins!) – One boy and 1 girl. Allahu-Akbar!

I know that finding someone isn’t easy. I was blessed to have a friend of the family introduce me to my wife and her family. It was truly a blessing from Allah. He made it easy for the both of us, but most times it doesn’t work out like that nowadays and that’s why I created BaitulNikah.com

I take this privilege of helping you find YOUR special someone very seriously. Although I can’t promise a happy ending, my goal is to build the world’s largest video matrimonial network for Muslims and to keep my service Halal. If I can help you find someone to marry, to fall in love with, to hang out and have fun with, to have a bunch of kids with, to increase the ummah and help each other get to Jenna … well then I did my job. That is my vision for Baitul Nikah!

Baitul Nikah is not a faceless corporation. You can trust that there is a completely Muslim staff here, who practices Quran and Sunna, running the day-to-day operations of Baitul Nikah and it is our passion to help you succeed in finding a husband or a wife to complete your deen, insha-Allah. Shukran for using Baitul Nikah and always feel free to message me directly on our blog.

- Kassim Muhammad, Sr. (Founder & CEO)

God Gives To Whom He Wishes, Don’t Get It Twisted.

An example of '' allāh '' written in simple A...

Salam,

Mashallah, I read a beautiful hadith today. It was actually quoted in a book called “Treatise on Maqasid al- Shari’ah by the great 20th century Zaytuna scholar Shaikh Muhammad AL-Tahir ibn Ashur ( May Allah swt have mercy on him).

Check it out (Narrated in Sahih Muslim that Abu Hurayrah reported)

The poor amongst the emigrants came to the Messenger of God (May peace and blessings be upon him) and said: ” The possessors of great wealth (ahl al-duthur) have attained the highest ranks and lasting bliss.” He the Prophet(s) said “How is that?” They said; They pray as we pray, and they observe the fast as we observe the fast, and they give charity and we do not give charity, and they set slaves free but we do not set slaves free”. Upon this the Messenger of God(May peace be upon him) said”Shall I not teach you something by which you will catch up those who proceeded you, and overtake those who come after you, only those who do as you do being more excellent than you?” They said: “Yes, Messenger of God, He said “Extol God, declare his Greatness, and praise him thirty-three times after every prayer.” Abu Salih said:”The poor emigrants came back to the Messenger of God(May peace be upon him) and saying “Our brethren, the possessors of property, have heard what we have done and they did the same”. So the Messenger of God said: ‘This is God’s Grace, which He gives to whom he wishes”.

In order words don’t hate, congratulate and be thankful for what you got. =)

Microsoft working on technology to promote Arabic online

Global software giant Microsoft is working on translation technology that would make the Arabic language more accessible to Internet users, according to Qatar’s daily The Peninsula.

“We’re deeply investing into that,” the newspaper quotes Anoop Gupta, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Unlimited Potential Group, as saying. He said Microsoft was developing translation technology that would translate web pages in English into Arabic. It is also modifying search engines to make the language of the Arab world more accessible globally.

Gupta also emphasised the need to ensure that people in the Arab world become great digital citizens, so that they become a part of the digital revolution. This would ensure more Arabic content on the internet, he added.

The Microsoft official applauded the developments in Qatar, where many citizens are already blogging on the Internet everyday and exploring new websites. He said students in Qatar were also improving accessibility to Arabic language by doing their projects on the internet in Arabic, the daily said.

Mohammad Mammoudi, Country Manager of Microsoft Qatar, told the Qatari newspaper that the company had already introduced a Language Interface Programme which helps in making available tools in Arabic.

Besides Qatar, Microsoft has also established an Innovation Center in Egypt which specialises in identifying ways of improving Internet search in Arabic and encouraging better participation of the Arabic community in the internet phenomenon, according to The Peninsula.

Now go give bill gates a copy of the Qur’an =)

Dubai Police Confirm Plan To Block 500 Search Terms From Google

Image representing Google as depicted in Crunc...

Source

Dubai Police confirmed on Tuesday that it has asked the UAE telecoms regulator to censor 500 search terms it deems offensive in a bid to block access to certain internet sites.

The Chief of Police spoke out about the force’s plans to block access to certain internet sites after it was reported that he had met with a Google official in Dubai last month to discuss barring the 500 terms.

Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim said the move was intended to protect the UAE’s young people from “pornographic” and “anti-religious” content on Google owned video sharing site YouTube

“These (500) terms open the door into the smut in the cyberspace bringing in devastating effect on the young generation as the studies had shown,” Tamim said in a statement published by state news agency WAM.

He also clarified that it was his deputy, Major General Khamis Matar Al Mazeina, who had met with a Google official to discuss the list of search terms that had been compiled by the UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).

The discussions have prompted a strong attack from media freedom group The Doha Centre for Media Freedom , which published a statement on Sunday calling on Google to re-think its cooperation with the censorship measures, which it calls “alarming”.

Google came under international fire in 2006 for succumbing to China’s censorship demands, which it was forced to agree to in order to obtain a licence to set up its search engine there.

In response to the Doha Centre’s criticism, which was released to the media, Tamim said: “The [Doha Centre for Media Freedom] interprets pornography as a legitimate right, which people are entitled to imbibe across the internet.”

“But the Dubai Police do not agree with them in holding this view and so they have to recognise people who travel in the opposite direction,” he added in the WAM statement.

Meanwhile, Google, the world’s largest search engine, has denied it is in the process of drawing up a censorship plan for the UAE.

A Google spokesperson confirmed that the company had met with the Dubai Police along with several other organisations from the region’s government, business and public sectors.

“Contrary to false reports no censorship plan was drawn up,” she said.

“At Google we believe in engaging with users, businesses, non-profits, and governments in order to address whatever questions or concerns they may have about our products.”

“It’s the best way for us to understand the local countries in which we operate, and for others to understand Google, YouTube, and the policies around our products,” she said.

However, the Google declined to comment on whether it would censor search results in the future if asked by one of the region’s governments.

The TRA was unavailable for comment.

Last month, media rights group Reporters Without Borders named Saudi Arabia as one of the world’s top 12 internet censors, along with China, Iran and Syria.

Minnesota State Agency Offers Islamic mortgages

NMMP from Hussein Samatar on Vimeo.

Source

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - For many Minnesota Muslims, it’s been virtually impossible to buy a home, because Islamic law forbids the paying or charging of interest. To help close the home ownership gap among Muslim immigrants, the state’s housing agency has launched a new program offering Islamic mortgages.

Islamic law does make exceptions to the ban on interest, if one’s family is at stake. But the exceptions are open to interpretation and for many observant Muslims, conventional mortgages are strictly taboo.

Nawawi Sheikh is one of them. The Somali-American said he and his wife just couldn’t go against their beliefs, even if it meant giving up their dream of owning a home. Still, he grew tired of moving from one rented apartment to another.

“One thing I hated was moving. I don’t like to move all the time,” he said.

He has no plans to move again anytime soon. Sheikh is the first home buyer to get a loan through the state’s New Markets Mortgage Program. That’s because, program manager Nimo Farah said, he has all the makings of a successful homeowner.

“I had lots of applications, but he’s the first one, because really, he was ready. He has been working at the same job for quite a while; he took care of his credit; he had the right size family, and he had all his documents together,” she said. “He was basically ready to go.”

The program is targeted at low-to-moderate income families. Qualified applicants have to complete first-time home buyer education classes. The goal is to help Muslim home buyers build wealth and reap the benefits of home ownership.

Here’s how the mortgage, known as Murabaha financing or “cost plus sale,” works:

The state buys a home and resells it to the buyer at a higher price. The down payment and monthly installments are agreed to up front at current mortgage rates.

The deal is identical to a thirty-year fixed-rate loan, except there’s no additional interest, because the higher up-front price factors in payments that would have been made over the life of a traditional mortgage.

A handful of private banks and lending institutions offer Islamic mortgages in the U.S., but Minnesota Housing is the first state agency to offer such a product. The program is the brainchild of Hussein Samatar, director of the African Development Center in Minneapolis.

“The process is different, but the outcome will look the same,” Samatar said. “We wanted to be as conventional as possible, while respecting the tenets of Islam.”

Samatar, who used to work for Wells Fargo, tried for years to launch Islamic financing. He said the fact that Minnesota Housing has agreed to participate is a nod to the Muslim community’s growing economic power.

Chicago-based Devon Bank is underwriting the loans for the New Markets program. Devon is one of the largest Islamic lenders in the country. Corporate Counsel David Loundy said he expects the demand for Islamic financing to grow as more Muslims make their home in the U.S. Loundy said Muslims tend to be good risks.

“If they worked so hard to get to this country, they don’t want to screw it up now that they are here, so they tend to pay their debts pretty promptly,” said Loundy. “In addition, you have a population that is religiously and culturally predisposed against having debt, so they want to pay down their debts as quickly as they can.”

The numbers back this up. In its five and a half years offering Islamic lending, Loundy said Devon Bank hasn’t lost a penny, though he admits the recession could make that record difficult to sustain as more borrowers face job loss.

But the bad economy is also offering opportunity. With housing prices at rock bottom, officials say the timing couldn’t be better to match first-time Muslim buyers with foreclosures that need new owners.

Nawawi Sheikh’s new three-bedroom south Minneapolis home is a former foreclosure. The African Development Center’s Hussein Samatar said there are thousands more potential buyers like Sheikh out there. He said the New Markets Mortgage Program will help the Minnesota Muslims community put down strong roots.

“It is great news for the country, and it really sends a great signal that the United States is our country,” he said.

A Rare Look Inside The Kabah

A rare glimpse of the inside of the Kabah. The cameraman is unknown; the video was received as an attachment on a widely circulated email.

It looks official, inshallah it’s my dream to go inside one day.

Muslim Job Site Reviews

Salam,

Mashallah it seems like the Ummah has a site for just about anything.

From blogs, to matrimonial sites to job sites,  you name it.

Oh the picture on the right was the only suitable picture I could find for the post, of course many Muslims use those job sites also. I personally use monster and love it.

Recently I’m starting to see an emergence of job sites catered towards the Muslim demographic, of course you can be a non Muslim and still take advantage of the benefits these sites provide and vise versa.

It’s not like you say the shahada (testimony of faith) then submit your resume, haha. Yea so no need to hate, any service or site for niche market always works, so before you start hating on muslims, fall back.

So let’s take a look at some of the job sites that have started and are getting popular, I wanted to just break down rates for employers and job seekers. Other services which these specific sites offer is resume writing and editing services.

  1. Ummahjobs.com (200,000 Alexa Ranking) Definitely is the best. You might be wondering why? Well First of all the main benefit of using this site is posting a job is 100% free unlike other job sites, I mean in a recession why would you want an employer to pay for a job post or in that case which job seeker can afford it? haha. That’s the main benefit, their are many more, peep it below.
  • Posting is easy and you can direct job seekers to apply how you want.
  • Jobs are posted immediately.
  • Edit or delete your jobs via your account.
  • Have new resumes sent to you. Choose criteria for sending.
  • Keep track of how many times your job posting ad is viewed
  • Maximum exposure: Jobs from our site get cross-posted to several other sites automatically.
  • Premium employers can upgrade their job posts to “Premium” for better visibility.
  • Access to our résumé database.View thousands of resumes by subscribing to our premium plans.
  • Click Here To Post Jobs Now

Now that’s official.

2. Maghribjobs.com ( 13,000,000 Alexa Ranking )

  •  At first I thought this was affiliated with Al Magrib Institute, but Maghrib is spelled differently, ha.
  • You can subscribe to an RSS Feed to updated Job Postings, that’s real convenient.
  • Posting a job for 35 days cost $50, that’s somewhere around a $1.50 a day, personally I think they should take off that fee. Alot of websites think by charging they can get quick revenue, the bottom line is the more free services you have, the more visitors you attract. More visitors means quicker monetizing through different methods. I agree to have a featured job post where an employer can post on the front page should have a charge, but you have to bait employers and job seekers in first.
  • Magrib jobs does come up in the top five in google, so their seo is on point.
  • They don’t have a services page, which is dissapointing, ummahjobs is far more professional in that sense.

3. gulfjobsites.com ( 70,000 Alexa)

  • Offers readers Multiple Languages to use the site
  • Free Alert Service -  updates on latests jobs, career information
  • Has a blog gulfjobsites.com/blog which teachers readers how to use the site, job hunting advice, interview tips, Job Market trends.
  • Has a voluntary department for users, offers prayer times, qibla directions, etc. ( courtesy of islamicfinder.org.

Let’s take a look at a screenshot of which sites show up in search results for ” Muslim Jobs ” and ” Islamic Jobs”. Also look at the right side bar for Adwords Campaigns and Muslim job sites that are looking for conversions.
