How to Get Rid of Onion Breath

Salam, onion-ring-mints.jpg

I came across a shirt that said “Your breath would make an onion cry”, and it reminded me of an important hadith.

Alot of brothers from time to time come to the masjid with their breaths kicking like soccer.

All of you know what I’m taking about, onions! Maybe garlic also, hehe.

Just in case your Muslim and you don’t already, Abu Huraira reported that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said:

He who eats of this plant (garlic) should not approach our mosque and should not harm us with the odour of garlic.

In another hadith, it was said by Jabir (R):

The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) forbade eating of onions and leek. When we were overpowered by a desire (to eat) we ate them. Upon this the (the Holy Prophet) said: He who eats of this offensive plant must not approach our mosque, for the angels are harmed by the same things as men.

Being clean is half the deen, not only purifying our inner selves but besides doing wudu and taking showers, we should all be on top of other aspects such as having a clean breath. Something so fundamental in Islam is often left aside when we are trying to be a practicing Muslims.

Nowadays Alhumduililah we have alot of options. This includes Alcholol free mouthwash, miswaks, oral b sonic toothbrushes with herbal mint ADA (American Dental Association) approved toothpastes and I forgot the 10,000 options we have for different gums when we enter the grocery aisle.

So the resources are here, we just need to utilize them. At the end of the day, we are all representatives of Islam and we should do our best to present this religion in a beautiful manner to Non Muslims. This begins with our character leading to other aspects such as how we dress, talk, pray, remember Allah swt and help those who are in need.

Don’t take this personally, we are all victims of this. I just find it interesting how some of the most impressive Muslims who stay on top of everything else can’t have a clean breath.

Anyways it’s all good when your fasting though. =)

Here are some quick tips on how to avoid having a bad breath:

  1. Do wudu
  2. Keep remembering your walking Daw’ah, this will encourage you to keep yourself fresh.
  3. Brush your teeth or use mouthwash right after you eat
  4.  Use the miswak after you pray
  5. Carry some halal gum or mints at all times
  6. Don’t go to the Masjid right after you eat onions or garlic unless you kill the odor. After all we wouldn’t go to a job interview in that condition.
  7. As stated above, our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) said the Angels are harmed by them! See this website for more details.

I’m sure there are other ways to get rid of bad breath, share your ideas or tips!

Here is another article I wrote a while back called - Miswak or Toothpaste…just clean your teeth please.

Oh and this article is meant for brothers and sisters, May Allah swt guide us all on the straight path, Ameen.

You can wear a tie…It’s all good.

Salam Yo,

Tying a tie is a mission, wearing it is even harder nowadays. Recently I’ve been coming across random brother’s who believe that wearing a tie is haraam. Chill out! You gotta look fresh sometimes and coming with the argument that it’s impermissible to wear a tie does not have a sound basis. No I’m not saying this because I like imitating the kuffar but Top scholars such as Mufti Taqi Usmani have said that your allowed to.

You seen my man Zakir Naik rocking a new tie and suit every time he air’s out his challenger in a debate. That’s because our beloved Prophet Muhammad (s) used to look his best whenever he went out. YOUR REPRESENTING ISLAM! keep that in mind. People like to O.D. (overdose) on the phrase “imitating the kuffar”. On the weekend I went to Ilm fest and Shaykh Yasir Qadhi spoke about this issue also. He said that wearing a tie is permissible, in addition he also stated that imitating the kufr is when you give up your beliefs for something else. Such as celebrating christmas, easter, so on and so fourth.

At the end of the day the Shariah has guidelines for both how men and woman should dress and we should’nt take things out of context. One thing that’s interesting to me is that I have never seen Shaykh Hamza Yusuf wear a tie. hmm..wonder why? Besides that point he is what Shaykh Faraz Rabbani from Sunnipath had to say

Assalamu alaikum,

The fuqaha have talked about this extensively. The conclusion is that it is permitted to wear ties, though better not to when reasonably possible.

It is not considered imitation of the kafirs because it is not something that is uniquely characteristic of them, unless one does so because one WANTS to be like kafirs are. The argument that the origins of ties are the Christian cross have not sound basis, as Mufti Taqi Usmani and other scholars have showed.

And Allah knows best

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani

Check it out, if your still having doubt’s then you can even buy non silk ties from here.

To wrap it all up, I had to watch a video from you tube to learn how to tie a tie. Inshallah just keep this information in mind and keep yourself looking fresh for the ummah. I know you want to wear one on your wedding day.

Would you wear a tie? Why or Why not? Holla at me. Wasalaam.

Miswak or Toothbrush…just clean your teeth please.

Salam Yo, motivationface.gif

How many times do you brush your teeth in one day, hopefully at least once. Alot of times I’ll speaking to brothers and their breath be kicking like soccer. I mean check it you gotta smile its sunnah, but if your teeth ain’t clean then how can you give dawah, besides that some brothers smoke so their teeth
are yellow, i hate cigarettes period. But anyhows back to the topic, do you use a miswak or toothbrush?

Now we all know why the miswak is the best thing to use, not only did our beloved Prophet Muhammad recommend it but the health benefits are never ending, see the sunnah doesn’t have to be technology advanced but all the scientists now doing research feel weak because for all the effort thats being put into making the dream toothbrush, the miswak is already doing all that.

Check it out, look at what the benefits include…

1. Miswaak strengthens the gums and prevents tooth decay.
2. Miswaak assists in eliminating toothaches and prevents further increase of decay which has already set in.
3. Miswaak creates a fragrance in the mouth.
4. Miswaak is a cure for illness.
5. Miswaak eliminates bad odors and improves the sense of taste.
6. Miswaak sharpens the memory.
7. Miswaak is a cure for headaches.
8. Miswaak creates lustre (noor) on the face of the one who continually uses it.
9. Miswaak causes the teeth to glow.
10. Miswaak strengthens the eyesight.
11. Miswaak assists in digestion.
12. Miswaak clears the voice.
13. The greatest benefit of using miswaak is gaining the pleasure of Allah.
14. The reward of Salaah (Prayers) is multiplied 70 times if Miswaak was used before it.

Ibn Umar (R) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said: ‘Make a regular practice of the Miswaak, for verily, it is healthy for the mouth and it is a Pleasure for the Creator (i.e. Allah is pleased with the Muslim who uses the Miswaak)’.(Source:Al-Bukhari)

So what are you going to do, Cleanliness is half of our iman, when you wake up, brush your teeth inshallah, put on some oil’s and remember Allah loves beauty….Keep your intentions good.

Below are the times when usage of Miswaak is Sunnah:

1. For the recitation of the Qur’an.
2. For the recitation of Hadith.
3. When the mouth emits and odor.
4. For the learning or teaching of virtues of Islaam.
5. For making Dhikrullah (Remebrance of Allah, meditation).
6. After entering ones home.
7. Before entering any good gathering.
8. When experiencing pangs of hunger and thirst.
9. After the signs of death are evident.
10. At the time of Sehri.
11. Before meals.
12. Before undertaking a journey.
13. On returning from a journey.
14. Before sleeping.
15. Upon awakening.

Recently i came across miswak toothpaste, I don’t think its sunnah, maybe its just another way for islamic businesses to make halal consumption, oh well I’m not trying to knock their hustle, but im good with my miswak.

So next time you in the street, using a miswak, and people are breaking their heads wondering what your doing, its your chance to give dawah. Pass them the miswak.

Inshallah i hope all of us keep our teeth clean and most importantly watch what we say, because the tongue can lead us to the hell fire.

Visit this link to find out about a clinical study that was done about the miswak and why people are using it.
